| Notes: | This is a competition freeform that I cut and polished as an entry in Australia's national lapidary assocation (AFLACA) annual competition for amateur lapidarists..this is one of my favorite sections which I have won first place several times (15 last count) over the years. This competition is not associated with any other professional opal or jewellery design competition or organisation. The opal is judged on cutting skill on a 100 point scale by trained lapidary judges. It is not judged on the quality of the opal but the opal has to display characteristic play of colours and be clean. This piece did win first place and is cut in a fanct artistic freeform style to highlight two distinct flat lenses of colour. Priced at field price as assessed by the valuation service run by the Lightning Ridge Miner's Association as dseen on the yellow card. Each member of the panel of expert assessors independently values the opal per carat at a field price (wholesale to buyers on the field). All valuations are then collected, the top and the bottom valuation discarded and the rest averaged. generally there are 6 to 9 valuers at a time. The opal as a competition winner is offered at this field price. It would generally be higher off the field in the city or overseas. |
